Reading to onese…
Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the classical and medieval worlds, while during the fifteenth century the term reading undoubtedly meant reading aloud. Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading become commonplace.
One should be wary, however, of assuming that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud was a distraction to others. Examinations of factors related to the historical development of silent reading have revealed that it became the usual mode of reading for most adults mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.
The last century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy and thus in the number of readers. As the number of readers increased, the number of potential listeners declined and thus there was some education in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud would cause distraction to other readers.
Towards the end of the century, there was still considerable argument over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully and over whether the reading of materials such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed, this argument remains with us still in education. However, whatever its virtues, the old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and periodicals for a specialized readership on the other.
By the end of the twentieth century, students were being recommended to adopt attitudes to books and to use reading skills which were inappropriate, if not impossible, for the oral reader. The social, cultural and technological changes in the century had greatly altered what the term reading implied.

III. Read the text then make questions and answer them:
Câu 1: Reading aloud was more common in the medieval world because_______.
there were few places available for private reading
people relied on reading for entertainment
few people could read to themselves
silent reading had not been discovered
Phân tích:
* Đoạn văn đầu tiên nói: “Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the classical and medieval worlds, while during the fifteenth century the term reading undoubtedly meant reading aloud.” (Đọc thầm là hoạt động hiện đại, gần như không được biết đến ở thế giới cổ đại và trung đại, trong khi vào thế kỷ 15, đọc có nghĩa là đọc to).
* Điều này cho thấy ở thế giới trung đại, đọc thầm chưa phổ biến.
* Câu “few people could read to themselves” (ít người có thể tự đọc thầm) giải thích lý do tại sao đọc to lại phổ biến hơn.
Đáp án: C. few people could read to themselves
Câu 2: The word commonplace in the first paragraph mostly means _______.
most preferable B. widely used
for everybodys use D. attracting attention
Phân tích:
* Đoạn văn đầu tiên nói: “Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading become commonplace.” (Chỉ đến thế kỷ 19, đọc thầm mới trở nên phổ biến).
* “Commonplace” ở đây có nghĩa là điều gì đó rất quen thuộc, được nhiều người làm, diễn ra ở nhiều nơi.
* “Widely used” (được sử dụng rộng rãi) là phù hợp nhất với nghĩa này.
Đáp án: B. widely used
Câu 3: The development of silent reading during the last century indicated_______.
an increase in the number of books B. a change in the nature of reading
a change in the status of literate people D. an increase in the average age of readers
Phân tích:
* Đoạn văn thứ hai nói: “…it became the usual mode of reading for most adults mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.” (…nó trở thành phương thức đọc thông thường cho hầu hết người lớn chủ yếu là vì bản thân các nhiệm vụ đọc đã thay đổi về tính chất).
* “The nature of reading” (tính chất của việc đọc) đã thay đổi, dẫn đến sự phát triển của đọc thầm.
Đáp án: B. a change in the nature of reading
Câu 4: Silent reading, especially in public places, flourished mainly because of_______.
the decreasing number of listeners B. the decreasing need to read aloud
the development of libraries D. the increase in literacy
Phân tích:
* Đoạn văn thứ ba nói: “As the number of readers increased, the number of potential listeners declined and thus there was some education in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud would cause distraction to other readers.” (Khi số lượng người đọc tăng lên, số lượng người nghe tiềm năng giảm đi và do đó nhu cầu đọc to cũng giảm bớt. Khi việc đọc vì lợi ích của người nghe trở nên ít phổ biến hơn, thì việc đọc như một hoạt động riêng tư ở những nơi công cộng như thư viện, toa tàu, văn phòng phát triển, nơi mà đọc to sẽ gây xao nhãng cho những người đọc khác).
* Cả hai ý “the decreasing number of listeners” (số lượng người nghe giảm) và “the decreasing need to read aloud” (nhu cầu đọc to giảm) đều đúng và liên quan đến nhau. Tuy nhiên, lý do chính cho sự phát triển ở nơi công cộng là vì đọc to gây xao nhãng.
* Xét các lựa chọn:
* A. “the decreasing number of listeners”: Đúng, dẫn đến nhu cầu đọc to giảm.
* B. “the decreasing need to read aloud”: Đúng, là hệ quả của việc giảm người nghe và bản chất nhiệm vụ đọc thay đổi. Tuy nhiên, lý do trực tiếp khiến nó “flourished in public places” là vì đọc to gây xao nhãng.
* C. “the development of libraries”: Thư viện chỉ là một trong những địa điểm công cộng.
* D. “the increase in literacy”: Tăng dân số biết chữ là nguyên nhân gốc rễ, nhưng không phải là lý do trực tiếp cho sự phát triển của đọc thầm ở nơi công cộng.
* Xét lại đoạn văn thứ ba, “As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public places… where reading aloud would cause distraction to other readers.” Nghĩa là khi việc đọc vì người nghe ít đi, nó phát triển như một hoạt động riêng tư ở nơi công cộng, nơi đọc to gây phiền.
* Lựa chọn B “the decreasing need to read aloud” bao hàm cả việc giảm người nghe và thay đổi bản chất nhiệm vụ đọc.
Đáp án: B. the decreasing need to read aloud
Câu 5: It can be inferred that the emergence of the mass media and specialized reading materials was an indication of_______.
a change in the readers interest B. a decline of standards of literacy
an improvement of printing techniques D. an alteration in educationalists attitudes
Phân tích:
* Đoạn văn thứ tư nói: “…the old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and periodicals for a specialized readership on the other.” (…văn hóa đọc chung cũ đã biến mất và được thay thế bởi truyền thông đại chúng in ấn một mặt và sách báo dành cho độc giả chuyên biệt mặt khác).
* Sự xuất hiện của truyền thông đại chúng và sách báo cho độc giả chuyên biệt cho thấy sự thay đổi trong sở thích và nhu cầu của người đọc.
Đáp án: A. a change in the readers interest
Câu 6: The phrase a specialized readership in paragraph 4 mostly means _______.
a limited number of readers in a particular area of knowledge
a reading volume for particular professionals
a status for readers specialized in mass media
a requirement for readers in a particular area of knowledge
Phân tích:
* Đoạn văn thứ tư nói: “…books and periodicals for a specialized readership”.
* “Specialized readership” ám chỉ những người đọc có sở thích hoặc chuyên môn cụ thể trong một lĩnh vực nào đó.
* “A limited number of readers in a particular area of knowledge” (một số lượng người đọc hạn chế trong một lĩnh vực kiến thức cụ thể) diễn tả đúng nhất ý nghĩa này.
Đáp án: A. a limited number of readers in a particular area of knowledge
Câu 7: The phrase oral reader in the last paragraph mostly means a person who_______
is good at public speaking B. practices reading to an audience
takes part in an audition D. is interested in spoken language
Phân tích:
* Đoạn văn cuối cùng nói: “…attitudes to books and to use reading skills which were inappropriate, if not impossible, for the oral reader.” (…thái độ với sách và kỹ năng đọc không phù hợp, thậm chí không thể thực hiện được đối với người đọc thành tiếng).
* “Oral reader” ở đây đối lập với “silent reader” (người đọc thầm), tức là người đọc to, đọc thành tiếng. “Practices reading to an audience” (thực hành đọc trước khán giả) là một cách hiểu phù hợp với nghĩa này.
Đáp án: B. practices reading to an audience
Câu 8: All of the following might be the factors that affected the continuation of the old shared literacy culture EXCEPT_______.
the printed mass media B. the diversity of reading materials
the specialized readership D. the inappropriate reading skills
Đáp án: B. the diversity of reading materials
Câu 9: Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. Reading aloud was more common in the past than it is today
The change in reading habits was partly due to the social, cultural and technological changes.
The decline of reading aloud was wholly due to its distracting effect.
Not all printed mass media was appropriate for reading about.
Phân tích:
* A. Đúng, đoạn đầu nói đọc thầm là hiện đại, thời xưa đọc to phổ biến hơn.
* B. Đúng, đoạn cuối nói “social, cultural and technological changes … had greatly altered what the term reading implied.”
* C. Sai. Đoạn văn thứ hai nói: “One should be wary, however, of assuming that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud was a distraction to others. Examinations of factors related to the historical development of silent reading have revealed that it became the usual mode of reading for most adults mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.” (Chúng ta nên cẩn trọng khi cho rằng đọc thầm chỉ xảy ra vì đọc to gây phiền. Các nghiên cứu đã chỉ ra rằng nó trở thành phương thức đọc phổ biến chủ yếu vì bản thân nhiệm vụ đọc đã thay đổi tính chất). Như vậy, sự suy giảm đọc to không CHỈ vì nó gây phiền.
* D. Không có thông tin trực tiếp trong bài nói về việc “not all printed mass media was appropriate for reading about”. Tuy nhiên, nếu xét ý nghĩa ẩn dụ của việc “tranh cãi xem đọc báo có làm suy yếu trí tuệ không”, có thể suy luận rằng có những quan ngại về một số loại hình truyền thông. Nhưng so với C, C là sai rõ ràng dựa trên lập luận của bài.
Đáp án: C. The decline of reading aloud was wholly due to its distracting effect.
Câu 10: The writer of this passage is attempting to_______.
encourage the growth of reading B. explain how reading habits have developed
C. show how reading methods have improved D. change peoples attitudes
Phân tích:
* Toàn bộ bài viết tập trung vào việc mô tả quá trình chuyển đổi từ đọc to sang đọc thầm, các yếu tố ảnh hưởng, và sự thay đổi ý nghĩa của việc đọc theo thời gian.
* Bài viết cung cấp thông tin lịch sử và giải thích các nguyên nhân.
* “Explain how reading habits have developed” (giải thích cách thói quen đọc đã phát triển) là mục đích chính của người viết.
Đáp án: B. explain how reading habits have developed
