PART 1: DEFINITION OF TSUNAMI

* A tsunami is a series of large ocean waves.
* These waves are caused by sudden displacement of a large volume of water.
* They are often called “tidal waves,” but this is a misnomer because they have nothing to do with tides.

PART 2: CAUSES OF TSUNAMI

* Earthquakes:
* The most common cause of tsunamis.
* Occur when the seabed is suddenly lifted or dropped during an undersea earthquake.
* This sudden movement pushes the water above it, creating waves.

* Volcanic Eruptions:
* Underwater volcanic eruptions can displace large amounts of water.
* Explosions from volcanic activity can also generate tsunamis.

* Landslides:
* Large landslides that fall into the ocean or a large lake can cause tsunamis.
* These slides displace the water, similar to earthquakes.

* Meteorite Impacts:
* While rare, a large meteorite impacting the ocean can create massive tsunamis.

PART 3: CONSEQUENCES OF TSUNAMI

+ For the Environment:

* Coastal Erosion:
* The powerful force of tsunami waves can wash away beaches and sand dunes.
* This leads to significant changes in the shape of the coastline.

* Salinization of Soil and Freshwater:
* Seawater surges inland, contaminating agricultural land with salt.
* This makes it difficult or impossible for crops to grow.
* Freshwater sources like wells and rivers can also be polluted with saltwater.
* Example: Following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, many coastal areas in countries like Indonesia and Sri Lanka experienced long-term damage to their farmlands due to salinization.

* Habitat Destruction:
* Coral reefs, mangrove forests, and other marine and coastal habitats can be severely damaged or destroyed.
* This impacts the biodiversity of these areas.

* Debris and Pollution:
* Tsunamis carry large amounts of debris (e.g., trees, buildings, vehicles) inland.
* This debris can pollute the land and waterways, and can also be dangerous.

+ For Humans:

* Loss of Life and Injuries:
* Tsunamis are incredibly destructive and can cause a huge number of fatalities.
* The strong currents and impact of debris lead to many injuries.
* Example: The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami is estimated to have killed over 230,000 people in 14 countries, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.

* Destruction of Infrastructure:
* Buildings, homes, roads, bridges, and power lines are often completely destroyed by the force of the waves.
* This makes rescue and recovery efforts extremely difficult.

* Economic Impact:
* Loss of livelihoods, especially for communities that depend on fishing or tourism.
* High costs for rebuilding homes and infrastructure.
* Disruption of trade and commerce.

* Displacement of People:
* Many people lose their homes and are forced to relocate, becoming internally displaced persons or refugees.

* Psychological Trauma:
* Survivors often suffer from long-term psychological effects, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.

Tsunamis are powerful and destructive waves that are triggered by large undersea earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. These waves can travel across the ocean at speeds of up to 700 kilometers per hour and reach heights of 30 meters or more when they approach the shore. The impact of a tsunami can be devastating, causing widespread damage and loss of life communities. Tsunamis can cause a range of hazards, including powerful currents that can sweep people and vehicles out to sea, and a wall of water that can inundate low-lying areas, destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure. In addition, tsunamis can trigger secondary hazards such as fires, landslides, and widespread power outages, making it for rescue and recovery efforts to proceed. To prepare for tsunamis, it is important to understand the risks and be prepared to take action. This includes creating an emergency plan, familiarizing yourself with evacuation routes, and staying informed about the latest alerts and warnings. Governments and organizations are also working to improve warning systems and evacuation plans to protect communities and minimize damage in the event of a tsunami. Despite these efforts, tsunamis will continue to pose a threat to communities around the world. It is important for individuals and communities to be prepared, stay informed, and take action to protect themselves and their loved ones in the event of a tsunami.
